At 3 o’clock on a Wednesday afternoon fourteen adolescent girls gathered in the teacher’s lounge at Daniel Wright Elementary to hear about my career journey as an actress. I was the invited guest speaker of Whitney Morrison Shelton, who runs the ROX program there at the school. ROX (which stands for Ruling Our eXperiences) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides evidence-based, empowerment programming for girls.
Today was ‘career day’ and the girls were excited about what I had to share with them about my acting experiences. It was a lot of fun and gave me a chance to reflect on my journey as an actor over the years. Like them I had an interest in acting at a young age and caught the bug in middle school. Two years into it I have 23 shorts and features under my belt as well as 19 commercials and industrials. It sure is gratifying to count your blessings every once in a while!
The girls were amazing. They were all very bright and asked thoughtful questions. Thanks to Whitney Shelton, ROX and Daniel Wright Elementary I had the chance to share a bit of myself and reflect on the joyful optimism of youth.
